1 Ripening Wool
A process in the preparation of stiff, wiry carpet wools. The oiled wool is rolled into balls and allowed to "ripen" for a time, sometimes as long as two weeks. The oil thoroughly penetrates the fibres, softens them and makes them easier to work in carding and spinning. -
2 Iceland Wool
Iceland wools are of a character entirely their own. Gradings are usually in three qualities, whether of whites, browns, fawns, greys or blacks. The Icelandic character is of a wiry, spiral coarse-tipped staple, and a very soft, fine staple root. In combing, these soft finer fibres are removed as noil and often command a high price owing to their remarkable softness and lightness in weight. The coarse fibres are in sliver and top form, and are often blended with other carpet tops. -

7 Etamines
The common type is a gauze or network cloth, loosely woven from coarse yarns, cotton and wool, cotton and linen, all linen, silk and wool, and many other mixtures. Used as an outer-garment over a shirt of some other colour or material. The term is the French name for bunting, or sifting cloth, and was originally applied to cloths used for sifting purposes. The real fabric is a voile type, but more wiry, and although many imitations are obtainable the real fabric is made from worsted yarns all through with end and end right and reverse twist warp yarns. A good quality is made 54-in. wide, 88 ends and 38 picks per inch, 30's T., 24's W., worsted yarns. Qualities vary greatly. -
8 Hair Cloth
A heavy twilled cloth containing wool waste and some calf hair. A nap is raised by gigging. Used for carriage rugs. ———————— This fabric is woven from very strong three-fold cotton warp and horsehair weft. Other material, such as linen, has been used for the warp. Usually made with about 44 ends per inch, and 80 to 100 picks per inch. The weave is usually the 5-end satin. Horse hair is not dyed, and the hair used is generally black, and is cut from both the tails and manes. The lengths vary from 30-in. to 46-in., and a single hair forms one pick. A special loom is used, fitted with mechanism for picking up the hairs and drawing them one by one into the shed. The shuttle for doing this is equipped with a pair of nippers. There is a rough fringe of hair at each selvedge. The cloth is very stiff or wiry and is used for coat linings. Formerly the cloth was also used for upholstering chairs and couches, and some is used today for this purpose (see Cilicium). -

10 Cotton (Peru)
Peru produces on an average about 250,000 bales of cotton per annum. There are three varieties grown very different from each other in their general characteristics Peruvian Sea Islands - This is an inferior Sea Islands cotton; and though it has a fairly long staple and a silky appearance it is more irregular, both as to colour and length of staple than the pure Sea Islands grown in the United States It has a length of about 13/8-in Rough Peruvian - This is a harsh wiry cotton, with a staple of about 11/4-in. It is an indigenous variety, and is the product of a perennial plant, which attains a height of about 10 feet. On account of its very harsh fibre this cotton is used chiefly or mixing with wool, with which it has some properties in common Smooth Peruvian - Smooth Peruvian is a soft class of cotton, very similar to American from which cotton it is not improbably descended. It constitutes about 70 per cent of the crop. Staple 11/8-in.
